Knockout of the week: Chan Sung Jung?s quick strike on Mark Hominick

Everyone’s favorite zombie, Chan Sung Jung, is fighting Dustin Poirier at UFC on Fuel 3 Tuesday night. Here’s a little reminder of what the featherweight can do:

His last two bouts ended memorably. In December, he knocked out Mark Hominick, as seen above, and in March of 2011 took out Leonard Garcia with the rarely-seen twister submission. Will he pull the great-ending hat trick on Tuesday? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

New Farm Bill Must Harvest Savings and Not Plant New …

Dear Representative:

On behalf of the millions of members represented by our organizations, we write urging you to support efforts to cut Washington?s outsized and outdated role in American agriculture.

Farm businesses are a testament to the skill, ingenuity, and persistence of Americans. While many sectors continue to feel the effects of the recession, American agriculture is one of the few bright spots in the economy. Net farm income is at $98 billion, nearly doubling between 2001 and 2011. Farm businesses exported nearly $140 billion worth of products, exceeding imports of agricultural products by more than $37 billion. And it?s estimated that one out of every 12 jobs is connected to agriculture.

With the Farm Bill reauthorization in progress, Congress must take this opportunity to reassess unnecessary and complicated federal policies that manipulate market decisions in this critical and vibrant component of our economy.

We believe the nearly $30 billion reduction in federal spending on agriculture agreed to in the House Budget Resolution should be the minimum reduction in the Farm Bill. Eliminating direct payments, as the resolution suggests, is long overdue. Making meaningful reforms to the largest Washington-based support for agriculture, federally subsidized crop insurance, is also a must. The Congressional Budget Office estimates this program?which provided $2.2 million in subsidies for just one agricultural producer?s insurance premiums in 2011?will cost more than $90 billion over the next ten years.

Also, we believe Congress must not create any new potentially budget-busting entitlement programs that would increase Washington?s role in farm business decisions, such as efforts to put taxpayers on the hook for ?shallow losses? in annual farm business revenue. And Congress should not use the Farm Bill to undo the responsible cuts to biofuels programs the House achieved in last year?s minibus appropriations bill.

America?s agricultural economy is strong. This strength and the glaring weakness of the federal budget?$15 trillion in debt and trillion dollar deficits projected for the next decade?make it essential that Washington?s role in agricultural policy be reformed. The House of Representatives must lead a full and open legislative debate on Farm Bill reauthorization. Samsung outs new Series 5 550P notebook in the UK, Ivy Bridge and numeric keypad onboard

Samsung outs new Series 5 550P notebook in the UK, Ivy Bridge and numeric keypad onboard

We saw a lot of things back at CES, and from the PC makers, it was mainly new Ultrabooks. Samsung, however, did present a pair of “regular” notebooks, and it looks like they’re just about to stretch their legs in the UK. The Series 5 550P is available in 15- and 17-inch varieties, sporting 1366 x 768 and 1600 x 900 displays respectively. Calling the shots will be quad-core Ivy Bridge Core i7 chips supported by 8GB of RAM. Graphics are dished up by a 2GB GeForce GT 650M, and there’s a Blu-ray optical drive plus capacity for up to 2TB of storage. Like the Series 7, sound is handled by integrated JBL speakers complete with “Max Bass Boost” subwoofer — crikey! Lower specification models will also be available (swapping the Blu-ray for DVD, and using shared graphics) when they hit UK stores this month.

Fujitsu unveils two new LifeBooks, shows some Ivy Bridge zen

fujitsu-ivy-bridge-Lifebooks-LH532-LH772

Fujitsu’s teased us before with Intel’s hot new chipset, but now it’s getting ready to actually ship two notebooks with Intel’s third-gen Core i7 CPU. The first, like others before it, will be a refresh of an older model, the LifeBook LH532, with its last-gen i7 tech swapped out for Ivy Bridge, new colors and a new moniker — the LH532 AP. Other specs will stay the same, with 2GB of system memory, NVIDIA GeForce GT620M graphics with 2GB of VRAM and a 15.6-inch 1366×768 high definition TFT LED wide screen. The LifeBook LH772, on the other hand, is an all-new model which will have the same Ivy Bridge i7 horsepower, but a slightly smaller 14-inch screen of the same 1366×768 resolution with 2GB NVIDIA Optimus graphics and 4GB of RAM. Being more upmarket than its cousin, it’ll have added touches like Onkyo Box Speakers, a DTS UltraPC II Plus sound system and a fingerprint sensor.

Both LifeBooks will have Fujitsu’s Face Sense utility, which uses a front facing camera to detect your presence, and pause the system if you’re not there. Fujitsu is also touting its Takumi design philosophy, supposedly offering zen-like simplicity and attention to detail — with features like multiple color choices, rounded keyboard outlines, leveled palm rests and dichromatic keys. Fujitsu hasn’t announced pricing yet, but if you need to hit your tasks quickly but harmoniously, check the PR below for more details.

Project Sputnik: Dell’s Ubuntu-based XPS13 laptop for developers

Project Sputnik: Dell's Ubuntu-based XPS13 laptop for developers

An internal innovation fund at Dell is helping create project Sputnik, an Ubuntu-based laptop aimed at developers. The hardware is Dell’s XPS13 Ultrabook, and the OS is the latest version of Canonical’s linux distro, Precise Pangolin 12.04 LTS. So far the image contains drivers and patches for hardware, key tools and utilities (emacs, Vim, Chromium etc.,) and a native tool for github repository integration is incoming soon. Dell has also worked closely with Canonical on the project to ensure maximum hardware compatibility. As for developer tools, instead of bloating the system with a complex suite of applications, Sputnik has been designed to let users go to a github repository and pull down individual developer profiles; Android, Ruby and JavaScript being available right now, with more to follow. The install image is available right now via the more coverage link, and more details on the project will follow as it develops.
